Last Friday Night* (alternate title: Queen of the Subway)

*I am soooo happy that Katy Perry is finally releasing my favorite track off "Teenage Dream" as a single!
Finally able to wear long sleeves without dying!!: Striped top from Madison I got for birthday, fave Levi shorts, Chanel, new hat from LF (because I hate not being able to wear hats to work), Wayfarers, nude flats
I loved finally getting to sleep in a bit Friday! I started off the morning by meeting Jeremiah at Columbia for Chicken and Waffles.... looks like that LA boy misses him some Roscoe's! I was so excited because I was starving, but by the time I got there I wasn't hungry. :( Then we met up with my "friend" (we have an apparently fake... I never know with him... feud) from high school and grabbed Starbucks and chatted.

I want serious props for getting to Columbia... I took the subway which involved me switching trains!

In the late afternoon, I went down to Soho to meet up with Tysa, who was here for a few days taking care of some stuff for work (she's an AMAZING designer... http://www.tysadesigns.com/ ... I want her life! (see, I'm even good at publicity when I'm not even hired to do it!)) at her hotel. Once again, I totally became Queen of the Subway by figuring out how to get to Soho. We hung out for a while in her hotel room, catching up and gossiping.  We had dinner in the hotel lobby where we were joined by her close friend, jewelry designer Loree Rodkin. Let me just say how surreal it was sitting at a table with two ladies who are so accomplished in the fashion industry, especially talking to them about my aspirations of being a designer.

Tysa and I walked around Soho, the West Village, and the Meat Packing district where she showed me everything from yummy restaurants to great boutiques, to friends apartment. On the way back to her hotel, we picked up cupcakes from Cafe Angelique. We had a total girls night and ate the cupcakes (which were amazing!!!) in bed watching old SNL episodes and Chelsea Lately.

Heat Wave

Day 2

First let me say that the weather on Thursday had me believing that Harold Camping's rapture prediction HAD come true and as Blake so cutely said "we ain't goin up because we're Jews" and I was left in hell (which is the only place I could imagine this weather being possible). It was 99 degrees and of course humid. GROSS! I miss dry old California!

I probably wore too many layers, but unfortunately I'm a major proponent of "fashion over comfort." I wore the hot pink American Apparel crop top I bought for my Whora the Explorer (for the adults out there, please replace "Whora" with "Dora") Halloween costume, a Elizabeth & James skirt and a Missoni scarf (thanks Claud!). I wore Chanel studs (one of which fell out later, but I luckily found) and some silver bangles. I wore a cool old shell and bead embellished bag (thanks again, Claud) and my new favorite Steve Madden espadrille heels (I felt more at home in heels). I knew my hair would be drenched (I know, ew) by the end of the day, so I put it in a pony.

It was so hot, I must have downed 10 glasses of water in the first hour I was there. The worst part was that I forgot something at home so during my lunch break I had to bear the devil weather and walk the 8 blocks to my apartment and back. Then I waited in the longest line at Starbucks for the refreshing Venti Passion Iced-Tea I was in desperate need of.

By night it was majorly storming. WHAT IS UP WITH THIS WEATHER???!!!!!???

Music Music Music

First off, I didn't post a pic of my outfit because a) people seem less concerned with what I wear when I'm not surrounded by fashion industry big-shots and more importantly b) because it wasn't that cute: a blue Free City tee, the same navy shorts and beige bag, a Missoni scarf, and nude and mustard color-blocked sandals.

I know I advertise my Vogue internship more than my Universal one, which is unfair. I really love both of them, I think that it's just that Vogue is something I've always dreamed of and something completely different from what I've done in the past.

The day was very music oriented... that sounds obvious, but I mean not just writing/researching artists, but also listening to them. First I discovered my love for Dev. Dev is a Uni Republic artist who is featured in "Like A G6" (aka my favorite party jam aka the song that taught me the valuable lesson that "slizzard is the new crunk"... well I guess that was Gillian too) and "Backseat."Her already released singles are great, but as an 80's music junkie, I'm super excited about her cover of "99 Red Balloons" which is actually amazing. Check her out, seriously. (See how good I am at publicity?)

There was also an artist showcase where an artist who wants to get signed comes in and performs. I think his name was Cameron James (definitely Cameron something... I think). I actually really liked him, the songs were cool and catchy, but more importantly he was cute. We'll see if the execs liked him as much as I did.

Lastly, I got to take home a copy of the Lonely Island's latest CD which was great. LOVE that there are posters of the ADORABLE Andy Samberg all over the office (it's no working next to GQ, but it should get points with Mom because at least I'm crushing on a good Jewish boy).

The Post Everyone* Has Been Waiting For

*by everyone I mean the few people who read this blog and are very bored... (ahem.. Gilli)
My first day outfit
Sorry this is so untimely, I just totally gave up on the blog for a while, but I'm back and devoted (I think).

The first question everyone asked me after Tuesday (my first day at Teen Vogue) was "What did you wear?" I'll admit picking an outfit was terrifying. I called my dad 3 times for fashion advice before my first day at Universal (sure, I took Mom's advice too but since my dad has to show his face in that office occasionally I figure it's his reputation on the line. Because, you know, record execs SOOOO notice/care what your daughter wears) and let's just say the outfit for TV was a billion times more important. Even though I'm not in the fashion department, I always like to present myself well, especially in the midst of fashion editors, models, and straight up fashionistas/style icons.

This is what I think about the outfit for the first day of anything (especially a fashion-oriented job): Obviously it's important; it's the first impression. But the thing is, while you totally want to rock it, you can't go full out because a) you want to scope out the attire in the office. Imagine how embarrassing a totally inappropriate an OTT outfit would be. and b) (which was more my concern at Vogue while point a was bigger at Universal) you don't know if you'll actually be seeing many people your first day. Depressing or depressing?: wasting your best outfit only to spend the majority of the day dealing with HR never seeing your main coworkers.

Last weekend I figured I should probably figure out what I was going to wear my first day. Of course, after going through my closet, I went through a major freakout-- I had NOTHING to wear! Finally I settled on an outfit (pictured above): My fab new Matthew Williamson for Impulse tunic (I still can't believe that I got something designed by the fab Matthew Williamson for $35 (I was devestated when I missed his H&M collection and even that was for sure pricier) and I didn't have to hire someone to wait in line like we did for Lanvin at H&M or wake up insanely early like I did for Zac Posen at Target), my new navy shorts I got last week in Soho at LF, my go-to vintage beige Chanel purse, these great gold and turquoise clover hoops from my Mommy, and of course no outfit would be complete without a pair of Ray-Bans (I opted for the Wayfarers over Aviators not necessarily because of the outfit but because they're classic me (that sounds a bit pretentious...)). But what about shoes? I was freaking out because All of my heels/wedges have black (my mom "doesn't feel comfortable" (quote from me, not her) pairing  navy and black-- a fashion no-no I'm actually okay with) except for my Louboutin booties which matched perfectly but could be used on war prisoners as a method of torture (but they're sooo pretty!). Also, while my roomie told me she was a size 8, she must really be a 9 because the great white Prada wedges of hers she suggested were way too big. I finally gave up on the hope of wedges (TV interns always suggest flats anyway) and opted for nude patent leather Steve Madden ballet flats.

Enough about the clothes! Technically, I'm not allowed to blog about my internship at all (I signed a contract). So I can't give specifics about the job, but I can tell you what it was like.

Walking into the Conde Nast building was surreal. Here I was, home to the fashion mecca that is the Vogue offices, living out my fantasy. I was stepping into the same building that is base for Anna Wintour, orchestrator of the entire fashion world. I freaked out walking past the racks of clothes as I entered the Teen Vogue offices. PS, advantage of TV over Vogue: we share a floor with the GQ offices... can you say eye candy???!!!!

Also, I did get 1 compliment on my outfit that day. Unfortunately, it wasn't from anyone at Teen Vogue, but from the girl working at The Counter (the burger place, not the counter at 4 Times Square).

First Day at Uni!

So I haven't blogged the past few days, but I'm back.

Today was my first day of work at Universal Republic. The day started off with my first solo subway ride. To get to the office, I take either the N or the R train, which is super easy to remember because they're my initials! I got on right outside my apartment and took it a few stops uptown. I had time, so I hit up Starbucks for my morning Venti Passion Iced Tea (or as a friend recently put it-- got my PT on).

I got in the elevator and headed up to the 8th (top) floor. It was very cool and there were caricature signed paintings of artists all over the wall. Once I got in, I met my boss Angela. She was super nice and super cool. She gave me a quick tour of the 3 man publicity department and where I'd be sitting. Then I met the other intern Lizzy, who is my age and has been interning throughout the spring semester. Thankfully, a lot of the programs and such are the same as at UMe so I think I'm pretty well prepared. We spent most of the day printing out clippings and filing them and arranging them on the bulletin board.

We headed out a little past 6:30 and I got back to my apartment and was completely pooped. I had to regain my energy though, because I had dinner plans with my friend Josh. We didn't know where to go and couldn't find anything walking around, so we ended up walking towards uptown and had dinner at a cute place right across from Bloomies. Side note-- what I find amazing is that Bloomingdales here closes at 8:30 (7:30 on Sunday)! That's barely (if at all) later than it is open in LA. Even the Forever 21 and H&M on my block are open later than that. Josh and I walked back to my apartment (where he got a cab to NYU-- that would have been an intense walk!) and took a detour through Times Square to scout out the Conde Nast building to make sure I knew where I was going tomorrow morning.

Hopefully I'll have some great stuff to say about Teen Vogue tomorrow!

Anti-Alliteration

TV
I have not been meaning to make my blog post titles alliterations. I noticed that I was doing so (Candice also pointed it out), so that stops here. Basically, the last 2 days I've been super lazy and chilling so I haven't had much to write. But I basically just put together some outfits I think are great for work. I've posted the first above. Just to keep things fun and fashion oriented. Every once in a while I'll post new outfits. Check out the info on each outfit after the jump.
note: I don't actually have these outfits. if only.... (thanks Gilli for pointing that out)

Mediocre Macy's

I felt soooo touristy taking this pic!
In LA, Macy's is not the place to go. In terms of department stores, I'm all about Bloomie's, Neiman's, Nordstrom and Saks. They just have better selections. That is unless we're talking about the Macy's in Fashion Square in the valley which has the best shoe department EVER!!! But I definitely had high hopes for the Macy's across from my apartment. I mean it is THE Macy's. Hello Miracle on 34th St. The sign even says it's "the world's largest store." I have to admit I was let down a bit: this shopping trip did not live up to my expectations. I would have said underwhelmed, but that would not be appropriate because I was most certainly overwhelmed by how massive it is. I think the size was definitely an issue: I had major issues navigating the store. There was no directory. I also think that while I was shopping some floors seemed so small that I must have missed sections entirely. Also, there is no one helping customers anywhere besides the cashiers at registers. I found a few things I liked and tried them on and ended up with one purchase: A Matthew Williamson for Macy's (I know, right!!!) blouse.

Then came the shoe department. Again, super high hopes. As I said, valley Macys' shoes could easily rival any high end department store's. First of all, there weren't any great shoes. Second, the place was a zoo. Soo many people! It was impossible to find a sales person and once I did and she scanned the barcode of my selections (a practice new to me, but it seems like a good/efficient idea), it took over 10 minutes for her to call out my name signaling me to come to the register and get my sizes. I needed to try on a smaller size, but I decided waiting for the 7.5 just wasn't worth it and peaced out.

That place is so big I almost couldn't find my way out, but between my 2 trips I figured out to look for the Louis Vuitton section (it's definitely a high end Macy's) which is right next to the 34th St exit.

Burger Buddies

Today was lazy day. I met up with my friend Chloe at the ShakeShack, a popular burger stand in Madison Square Park. The line was long, but not nearly as long apparently as it usually gets. But I've stood in a longer line at Sprinkles (yes, Chloe if your reading this, I DID decide to reuse that joke). The test was if it was better than In-N-Out. Bad news, it wasn't. BUT, it was pretty good. I wish I had more to talk about today, but I don't start work until next week. I promise it will pick up and things will get more interesting!

Soho Spending

Let me just say after a day of shopping in Soho (really only a morning- it was all before lunch), I am done spending money for quite some time. My friend Chelsea took the train from Long Island and we cabbed it over to Soho for some shopping and lunch. Of course I didn't even go to NY unique boutiques- I came home with bags from Dash, LF, and Intermix: all of which have LA counterparts. I checked out Scoop too, and while I didn't buy anything, the Free City section made me feel at home. It is supposed to rain today (hasn't started yet), but it was still so gross hot and muggy that after just 1 store I had to change from a tee to a tank and from my fave cowboy boots (my only shoes here that could survive the forecasted "scattered strong storms") into ballet flats. The humidity is sooo gross and the heat is just draining the energy out of me! I think that I'm not starting at Teen Vogue until next week which sucks because a) then why did I move in this week? and b) what am I going to do with myself until then? I figure I'll take tomorrow to stock up on food and stuff for the apartment, but I have a feeling it's going to be a long and sticky weekend in the city.

Moving In

My first day in the city. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when it came to my apartment, but I was pleasantly surprised. First thing I noticed was all the surrounding stores. For a minute, the snob in me came out and I was a bit disappointed by the Gap and Banana Republic and Macy's on the block and the lack of higher end shops-- but let's face it, I'd go broke and the designer displays would just be rubbing in my face all the luxury I couldn't afford. Of course, I'm also directly surrounded by some of my favorite shops: Zara, H&M, and Forever 21! And, I'm right next door to the Empire State Building. I only became interested in  going to the observation deck when I remembered that it was the meeting place for Blair and Chuck in the Gossip Girl season 3 finale- maybe living in New York will make me more Blair and I'll find my real life Chuck? *sigh* My building itself is really nice and the apartment is a nice size. Surprisingly, there was plenty of room for my stuff, even with my roomie already moved in. I finally met Zoe (my roommate)... she's adorable and nice and gave me the lowdown on Vogue and Conde Nast. My dad took me out to dinner and the night ended on the most amazing note possible in New York City -- frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity... so yummy (#nomnomnom). Can't wait to shop and check out the city with Chelsea tomorrow!

Up in the Air

Just set up my blog and doing my first post on the trip from LAX to JFK. I'm definitely being spoiled by flying with my dad, but I guess this is a nice last time being babied before I'm living on my own in New York... completely independent! I'm not really sure how this blog thing works so I don't have much to say before I research a bit and think things through. Hopefully this won't be as addicting as Facebook and Twitter and I'll try to keep things interesting (as possible). I will also try to keep the hashtags to a minimum and leave that to Twitter #butdontholdmetoit (jk).
